ASiQ
Ltd. was formed in 1993. The objective of the company was to
create a software solution that would meet the future communications
needs of passengers. The original ASI Group was a hardware manufacturer,
whose intellectual property comprised a hardware platform that evolved
over a 7-year development program with Qantas Airways.
In the
early 1990’s with the advent of the Inmarsat global satellite
constellation for aircraft, Qantas produced a specification for a system
that could be used by the cabin crew as a management tool. The
system designated the Aircraft Communication and Management System “ACAMS”,
was designed to communicate throughout the airlines’ Virtual Private
Network (operated by SITA) and administer the onboard crew functions
such as the duty free transactions and cabin maintenance requirements.
The Qantas program drew considerable attention and resulted in ASI
qualifying as an approved subcontractor with Airbus, and completing 31
installations on Qantas Boeing aircraft.
By the
late 1990’s, the world airline focus had shifted from onboard crew
administration tools to providing passenger communications and in-seat
entertainment. ASI recognised that as telephones proliferated throughout
international airlines, a new opportunity would emerge. By
creating an interface between the passenger’s notebook computer,
cellphone and the
onboard communications network, passengers would be able to access
messaging services. With this in mind, ASI focused its efforts on developing
its latest products, the ASiQnet, G3CARS and BizjetMobile systems.
